ウッドワード 『イギリスの化石博物誌』John Woodward (1665-1728)は、イギリスの博物学者・地質学者。1692年にロンドンのグレシャムカレッジで物理学の教授となり、1695年、『地球の自然史について』（An Essay toward a Natural History of the Earth and Terrestrial Bodies, especially minerals）を刊行した。Woodward はその本の中で、Thomas Burnet (1635-1715) に倣い、聖書の創世記で語られている地球の歴史について、自然史的な説明を試みているが、地球はかつて一度完全になめらかな球殻となったと主張するBurnetに反して、現在見られる地球のほとんどの部分は大洪水の時に形成されたものとした。
Woodward は、ほかに植物の栄養に関する実験を行い、植物に吸収される水分が蒸散することを初めて示した。
1704年からは、鉱物の分類体系の研究を始め、亡くなるまでそれを続けた。
本書では、地層についての説明がなされ、それぞれの層に含まれる貝は大洪水によって海からもたらされたものとする。
